Movie Review: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Introduction

Ever thought what struggle, scarcity and fight for resources look like? Well then, this movie franchise is right for you. Set in a deserted place, played by one of the finest actors in the industry, this prequel explains how Furiosa became The Furiosa. A pure soul, full of adrenaline to live her life, fight back and survive the harshest conditions with her best possible abilities, it is truly a great movie. The amount of work George Miller and his team has put into this movie is worth praising.

I was fortunate enough to watch this masterpiece in an IMAX theatre with full immersion and within the first week of release of this film. I was able to fully absorb the amount of work the makers of this film has put into. The music by Tom Holkenborg was pleasingly ear shattering. Picture quality was top notch. I was extremely impressed by this film, which is why I am forced to write a movie review right on my own blog.

Well, Some Details:

I cannot reveal entire story currently as it is just released few days ago (May 23, 2024). However, in brief, the story revolves around a little girl Furiosa who was enjoying with her friend. Unfortunately, she was snatched away by some evil biker guys with her friend witnessing it. With the help of her shrill call, her mother was able to locate her and follow those guys and even managed to kill some of them. Ultimately, her daughter lands into the hands of a cunning yet brutal warlord (played by Chris Hemsworth). Her mother managed to get her daughter back. Unfortunately, she paid the consequences for interfering with that warlord in one of the most brutal ways possible, right in front of her own daughter’s eyes. Young Furiosa (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) saw her own mother die, yet her screams and tears had no value. That incident filled vengeance in her blood, which is something she demands back from that warlord in the very end of this film.

In the following events, it is shown that the warlord was ambitious and greedy for the abundance of resources wasteland has to offer. So according to him, all of wasteland belongs to him in one way or the other. This led him to pursue The Gastown, The Citadel and The Bullet Farm one by one. His very nature was insatiable greed and brainwashing, a person who can manipulate people’s minds quite effectively. After seizing Gastown by clever infiltration, he did not play by the rules of the wasteland which he promised the lords of Citadel and Bullet farm. However, in the process, he lost young Furiosa to Immortan Joe. The Citadel is the place where she builds herself up from the very bottom. She stayed there for a long period of time for that one golden opportunity of freedom. If this film teaches the audience something, that is the value of freedom and the value of our everyday resources like food, water and fuel. And above all, the might of sheer struggle and what it can achieve.

She adapted herself to that harsh environment inside The Citadel and has concealed her true intentions even when provoked. Her mother gave her a life to protect which she did with the best of her abilities, hiding it from all external attention. From her young years, she seemed extremely energetic and a will to fight back against all odds anyhow. She harbored also one more thing. To get even with that guy who is responsible for her mother’s fate. Not only Dementus, that warlord, took away her mother from her life, but was also responsible for bringing darkness in her life. But here is the thing, these circumstances also made her The Furiosa. Over time, she met a guy named Jack who drives one of those monstrous double engine war rigs.

Dementus did not get away this time when he tried to take over The Bullet Farm like he took over The Gastown. Furiosa and Jack visited bullet farm in a wrong time foiling his evil plan. By trying to ambush the rig and attack Jack, entire farm was thrown into chaos, effectively destroying it. Furiosa did help Jack a lot in combat and both eventually fled away with a car. But can those small wheels compete with Dementus’s massive wheels which can climb mountains? Obviously, no. That again led to immense torture to both Furiosa and Jack. Only Furiosa was able to break free from that place by sacrificing something valuable to her. Jack couldn’t.

With that great injury in her left hand, a sacrifice which she made for her freedom, it was not possible for her to get even with Dementus in that time in that condition. However, as time passed by, she heals gradually. She also built a prosthetic arm for herself.

Dementus loses once again, this time by going for The Citadel. And after some events, she takes a war machine of a vehicle and goes all out on Dementus. He tried very hard to flee away from Furiosa’s wrath. He tried to build up many obstacles for her this time too. He was unsuccessful.

Furiosa wanted all those things back which were lost due to Dementus. But Furiosa made it sure that he does not get away with this so easily. In the following events, she meets with all the wives of Immortan Joe. That leads to the events in the previous film.

Wrap Up:

In my opinion, it was an exceptional story and I liked every second of this film. A lot has been improved in this prequel which should be in sequel technically. But anyways that does not matter a lot. Lessons that can be taken from this film are that, crimes and injustice will get punished eventually one way or the other. Struggle and pain are a part of life and we should embrace it and get motivated by it. I believe there is a Furiosa among all of us who seeks freedom, justice and truth. One more message which has been reiterated in this film is, fight for resources and what reality it can bring to this world.
